The UCLA Eye Trauma and Emergency Center provides immediate response
to ophthalmic emergencies 24 hours a day for consultative, medical
and surgical care involving both primary and secondary surgical
repairs. The Center offers complete evaluation and treatment of
the injured eye including emergency surgery of the eyelids, anterior
segment, posterior segment and orbit. Primary surgical repairs are
performed immediately. Secondary repairs are usually scheduled.
In many cases, treatment involves medical follow-up alone.
Related Information
Trauma to the eye requires prompt medical attention. If anything
penetrates an eye, no attempt should be made to remove it. The eye
should be loosely covered, and the injured person should seek emergency
care immediately. In the case of a chemical burn, the eye should
be flushed thoroughly with water prior to seeking emergency care.
Warning signs that may indicate an eye condition requires urgent
medical attention include persistent pain, sudden sensitivity to
light, new-onset flashing lights and any sudden change or loss of
vision.
