The UCLA Uveitis Fellowship Program offers
comprehensive training in the evaluation and medical management of
uveitis and other inflammatory eye diseases. Experience in the
surgical management of inflammatory eye diseases is also available.
The program is under the overall direction of Gary N. Holland, MD,
Administrative Chief of the Cornea and Uveitis Division and Director
of the Ocular Inflammatory Disease Center, Jules Stein Eye
Institute. A strength of the fellowship program is exposure to
multiple faculty members with clinical and research interests
related to uveitis and other inflammatory eye diseases. Fellows are
supervised in their activities by Dr. Holland and two other
full-time, subspecialty-trained faculty members Lynn K. Gordon, MD,
PhD, and Ralph D. Levinson, MD. They also interact on a regular
basis with uveitis specialists Kayur H. Shah, MD, and Scott M.
Whitcup, MD, who are members of the part-time and volunteer faculty.
Faculty are active participants in national and international
professional organizations, including the American Uveitis Society,
the International Uveitis Study Group, the International Ocular
Inflammation Society, and the Federation of Clinical Immunology
Societies, and play leadership roles in several of these
organizations. Support is provided for fellows to participate in various activities of these subspecialty
organizations, such as the annual meetings of the American Uveitis Society.
Fellows also work with faculty members in the UCLA Divisions of
Glaucoma, Retina, Adult and Pediatric Rheumatology, and Infectious Diseases during
patient care and research activities.
The Uveitis Fellowship Program meets training guidelines
established by the American Uveitis Society for the uveitis
subspecialty, which have been adopted by the Association of
University Professors of Ophthalmology (AUPO) Fellowship Compliance
Committee (FCC).
A single one-year position is offered through the San Francisco
Fellowship Match each year.
Research: Research is an integral part of
the fellowship program. Fellows may become involved in patient-based
or laboratory-based projects, and training is provided in research
methods. Special research programs in the Ocular Inflammatory
Disease Center include those dealing with toxoplasmosis, the
ophthalmic disorders associated with AIDS, immunogenetics of
inflammatory eye disease, birdshot chorioretinopathy and chronic
anterior uveitis in children. Fellows typically complete and publish
one or two original research articles, and frequently prepare a book
chapter or review on a subject of interest to them during their
training. Several research programs involve close collaborations with other institutions in
the United States and with investigators in Europe and South America. Fellows
have the opportunity to become involved in these collaborations, as well. Fellows will
also become certified to participate in two NIH-supported, multicenter clinical trials:
the Longitudinal Studies of the Ocular Complications
of AIDS (LSOCA) and the Multicenter Uveitis Steroid
Treatment (MUST) Trial.

Clinical Experience: Clinical experience
involves participation in busy faculty practices at the Jules Stein
Eye Institute, and the Uveitis Clinics of two Los Angeles County
hospitals (Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and Olive View-UCLA Medical
Center). Fellows are exposed to patients of all ages, with diverse
inflammatory eye diseases, including those of both the anterior and
posterior segments. Activities include diagnostic evaluations,
management of emergency cases and continuing care of patients.
Fellows will participate in the management of immunomodulatory
therapies and the perioperative care of patients undergoing a
variety of surgical procedures. The clinical experience can be
tailored to the particular interests of each fellow, especially for
those who anticipate additional fellowship training in other
surgical subspecialties, such as retina or cornea-external ocular
disease.
